Being a mechanical gauge, it’s very straight forward to operate. Simply put the chuck on the valve stem and get your measurement on the dial face. The reading will display on a high contrast scale and will be accurate to within +/- 2% as calibrated per ANSI standards. Once you remove the chuck from the stem, your reading will still be displayed on the dial face until pushing the pressure release button. This pressure release button also operates as a bleed valve for releasing air from the tire in the case of over-inflation.
This gauge is steel and brass constructed so it’s tough and durable. In addition, it comes with a super rugged gear-styled rubber casing for added protection. The chuck end is at a 45-degree angle and swivels 360-degrees for easy viewing. The extended tip also helps for improved fit onto the valve stem to prevent air leakage.
Reading through the negative reviews for this product there are comments from people indicating an element advertised as a convenience by TireTek is actually not helpful. The angle chuck creates an issue since the end cannot be placed directly onto the stem. Instead, one needs to approach the valve laterally to fit the chuck on the stem properly. This can be awkward to maneuver and takes some adjusting to have the gauge work correctly.
The majority of other negative reviews are having to do with accuracy. This is a very common complaint with all tire gauges, not just this particular offering from TireTek. I’ll simply point out that this gauge is calibrated to the ANSI B40.1 Grade B (2%) international accuracy standard. This means the gauge will be accurate within 2 PSI plus or minus. This is a very common standard for mechanical tire gauges and almost all gauges claim to be within this variance level. If your main objective is accuracy when purchasing a new tire gauge, a digital type may be more appropriate for your needs.
This gauge makes the Top Rated Tire Gauges list so, clearly, it’s recommendable. Over 1,650 reviews are available with 86% of those being 5-star. The same version of this gauge is available with an air hose as well. Read the review for that gauge with air hose here.
The simplicity is what really appeals with this gauge, with the easy to read dial and single push button air release valve. A buyer of this tire gauge should expect an easily operated, durable, and accurate measurement time and time again. If your plan is to use this on a passenger vehicle, car, truck, bicycle or motorcycle then there should be a high level of confidence putting this in your cart.
